Proverbs 1 Devotional

Where Knowledge Begins

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”Proverbs 1:7 (BSB)

Proverbs states its purpose at the outset: wisdom, discipline, and insight for right living, offered to the simple and the young, and to the wise who still want to grow (1:2-5). Then it lays the foundation for all of it. Knowledge starts with the fear of the LORD (1:7), a reverent awe that takes God seriously as God.

The chapter then sets two voices side by side. Violent men invite a young man into their scheme for easy plunder, though their ambush ends up taking their own lives (1:11-19). Wisdom, meanwhile, calls out in the busiest public places, holding out her hand to anyone who will listen (1:20-24). Her warning to those who refuse her is severe, because ignoring God's call has real consequences (1:29-32). Yet the chapter closes with an open promise of security and freedom from dread for whoever listens (1:33). God's wisdom is offered aloud, in the street, to ordinary people. What it asks first is that we stop and listen.

To think about: Whose voice has been loudest in your decisions lately, and what would it look like to listen first to the LORD?

About Proverbs 1: The Purpose of Proverbs and Wisdom's Call

The book opens by naming Solomon and its aim of teaching wise, right living, with reverence for the LORD as the starting point of knowledge. A father warns his son against violent, greedy men, and Wisdom, pictured as a woman, calls out publicly, warning those who ignore her and promising safety to those who listen.
