Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes and calls his followers salt and light. He says he came to fulfill the Law, not abolish it, and shows that God's commands reach the heart: anger, lust, divorce, oaths, revenge, and love for enemies.

Jesus warns against doing good works, prayer, and fasting to be seen by others, and teaches the Lord's Prayer. He urges storing up treasure in heaven, since no one can be devoted to both God and money, and tells his hearers not to worry but to seek first God's kingdom.

Jesus warns against hypocritical judging, invites his hearers to ask, seek, and knock, and gives the Golden Rule. He contrasts the narrow and wide gates, warns of false prophets and empty profession, and closes with the wise and foolish builders.
