John records the revelation of Jesus Christ given to him on Patmos, greeting the seven churches with blessing from the eternal God. He sees the glorified Son of Man among seven lampstands, who holds the keys of death and Hades and commands him to write what he sees.
- 2Revelation 2: Letters to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, and Thyatira
Christ addresses four churches, praising their faithfulness and rebuking their failures. Ephesus has abandoned its first love, Smyrna is encouraged to be faithful unto death, Pergamum tolerates false teaching, and Thyatira tolerates the prophetess Jezebel.
- 3Revelation 3: Letters to Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea
Christ tells Sardis it has a reputation for being alive but is dead, promises Philadelphia an open door and protection, and rebukes lukewarm Laodicea for its self-satisfaction. He stands at the door and knocks, promising to share his throne with those who conquer.
- 4Revelation 4: The Throne Room of Heaven
John is taken up through an open door into heaven and sees God seated on a throne, surrounded by a rainbow, twenty-four elders, and four living creatures. The creatures praise God as holy, and the elders cast their crowns before him as Creator of all things.
- 5Revelation 5: The Lamb and the Scroll
No one is found worthy to open the sealed scroll in God's hand except the Lion of the tribe of Judah, who appears as a Lamb that was slain. The elders and creatures sing that he ransomed people from every nation by his blood, and all creation worships him.
- 6Revelation 6: The First Six Seals
The Lamb opens six seals, releasing four horsemen bringing conquest, war, famine, and death. The souls of martyrs under the altar cry out for justice, and at the sixth seal the heavens and earth are shaken as people hide from the wrath of the Lamb.
- 7Revelation 7: The Sealed and the Great Multitude
Before judgment falls, an angel seals 144,000 servants of God from the tribes of Israel. John then sees a great multitude from every nation before the throne in white robes, washed in the blood of the Lamb, who will shepherd them, while God wipes away every tear.
- 8Revelation 8: The Seventh Seal and the First Trumpets
When the Lamb opens the seventh seal, there is silence in heaven, and the prayers of the saints rise before God. Seven angels receive trumpets, and the first four bring judgments of hail and fire, a burning mountain, a bitter star, and darkening of the sun, moon, and stars.
- 9Revelation 9: Locusts and the Army from the Euphrates
At the fifth trumpet, demonic locusts rise from the bottomless pit to torment those without God's seal. The sixth trumpet releases four angels and a vast army that kills a third of mankind, yet the survivors do not repent of their idolatry and sins.
- 10Revelation 10: The Angel and the Little Scroll
A mighty angel stands on sea and land and declares that at the seventh trumpet God's hidden purpose will be completed. John is told to eat a little scroll, sweet in his mouth but bitter in his stomach, and to prophesy once more concerning many nations.
- 11Revelation 11: The Two Witnesses and the Seventh Trumpet
John measures the temple, and two witnesses prophesy for 1,260 days until the beast kills them. After three and a half days God raises them up to heaven. At the seventh trumpet, heaven announces that the rule of the world now belongs to God and his Christ forever.
- 12Revelation 12: The Woman and the Dragon
A woman gives birth to a male child who will rule the nations, and a great red dragon seeks to devour him, but the child is caught up to God. Michael casts the dragon, Satan, out of heaven, and believers conquer him by the blood of the Lamb as he pursues the woman.
- 13Revelation 13: The Two Beasts
A beast rises from the sea with authority from the dragon, blaspheming God and making war on the saints, and the whole earth worships it except those in the Lamb's book of life. A second beast from the earth deceives people into worshiping the first and taking its mark.
- 14Revelation 14: The Lamb on Mount Zion and the Harvest
The Lamb stands on Mount Zion with the 144,000. Three angels proclaim the eternal gospel, the fall of Babylon, and judgment on those who worship the beast, and the faithful dead are called blessed. The earth is then reaped in a grain harvest and a grape harvest trodden in the winepress of God's wrath.
- 15Revelation 15: The Song of Moses and the Lamb
John sees seven angels with the last seven plagues, which complete God's wrath. Those who conquered the beast stand beside a sea of glass, singing the song of Moses and the Lamb in praise of God's just ways, and the temple in heaven fills with the smoke of his glory.
- 16Revelation 16: The Seven Bowls of Wrath
Seven angels pour out bowls of God's wrath: sores, seas and rivers turned to blood, scorching heat, darkness, and the drying of the Euphrates as nations gather for battle at Armageddon. At the seventh bowl a great earthquake splits Babylon, yet people still curse God.
- 17Revelation 17: The Great Prostitute and the Beast
An angel shows John the great prostitute, Babylon, riding a scarlet beast and guilty of the blood of God's people. The angel explains the beast's heads and horns as kings who will make war on the Lamb, but the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings.
- 18Revelation 18: The Fall of Babylon
An angel announces that Babylon the great has fallen, and God's people are called to come out of her lest they share her sins. Kings, merchants, and sailors mourn the sudden ruin of the wealthy city, while heaven rejoices that God has judged her for the blood of his people.
- 19Revelation 19: The Marriage Supper and the White Horse Rider
Heaven rejoices over Babylon's judgment and announces the marriage supper of the Lamb, whose bride is clothed in righteous deeds. Christ appears as a rider on a white horse called Faithful and True, defeats the beast and false prophet, and throws them into the lake of fire.
- 20Revelation 20: The Thousand Years and the Final Judgment
An angel binds Satan for a thousand years, while those who died for their testimony and refused the beast reign with Christ. Satan is then released, gathers the nations against the saints, is defeated, and is thrown into the lake of fire. The dead are judged before a great white throne by their deeds.
- 21Revelation 21: The New Heaven, New Earth, and New Jerusalem
John sees a new heaven and a new earth and the holy city descending from God, who will dwell with his people and wipe away every tear. The New Jerusalem shines with God's glory, has no temple because God and the Lamb are its temple, and only the redeemed may enter.
- 22Revelation 22: The River of Life and the Promised Return
The river of the water of life flows from God's throne, and the tree of life yields fruit for the healing of the nations, where God's servants will see his face. Jesus promises that he is coming soon, and the book ends with an invitation to come and a warning not to alter its words.
