God creates the heavens and the earth, and over six days he forms light, sky, land, seas, plants, sun, moon, stars, and living creatures by his word. On the sixth day he creates mankind, male and female, in his own image, and he sees that everything he made is very good.
- 2Genesis 2: Eden and the First Marriage
God rests on the seventh day and blesses it. The chapter then retells the creation of man, formed from dust and given life by God's breath, placed in the garden of Eden, and warned not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God makes the woman from his side.
- 3Genesis 3: The Fall
The serpent deceives the woman, and she and Adam eat the forbidden fruit, then hide from God in shame. God pronounces curses on the serpent and the ground and hardship for the man and woman, promises that the woman's offspring will crush the serpent, and drives them from Eden.
- 4Genesis 4: Cain and Abel
God accepts Abel's offering but not Cain's, and Cain murders his brother in jealousy. God curses Cain to wander yet puts a protective mark on him. Cain's descendants build a city and develop crafts, Lamech boasts of violence, and Seth is born, as people begin to call on the Lord.
- 5Genesis 5: From Adam to Noah
The chapter traces the line of Adam through Seth to Noah, recording each man's age and death. Enoch breaks the pattern, walking with God until God takes him, and Lamech names his son Noah in hope of relief.
- 6Genesis 6: Human Wickedness and the Ark
As mankind multiplies, the sons of God take human wives and wickedness fills the earth, grieving the Lord, who resolves to blot out mankind. Noah finds favor with God, who tells him to build an ark and promises to establish his covenant with him, and Noah obeys.
- 7Genesis 7: The Flood
Noah, his family, and pairs of every kind of animal enter the ark, and the Lord shuts them in. Rain falls for forty days and nights, the fountains of the deep burst open, and the waters cover even the mountains, destroying every living thing on land except those in the ark.
- 8Genesis 8: The Waters Recede
God remembers Noah, and the waters recede until the ark rests on the mountains of Ararat. Noah sends out a raven and a dove until the dove returns no more. Leaving the ark, Noah builds an altar, and the Lord promises never again to curse the ground or destroy all life by a flood.
- 9Genesis 9: The Covenant with Noah
God blesses Noah's family, permits eating meat without its blood, and requires the death penalty for murder because man is made in God's image. He makes a covenant never again to flood the earth, with the rainbow as its sign. Noah's drunkenness leads to a curse on Canaan.
- 10Genesis 10: The Table of Nations
The chapter lists the descendants of Noah's sons Japheth, Ham, and Shem, tracing how the peoples of the earth spread out after the flood by family, language, and territory. It includes Nimrod, a mighty hunter who founded Babel and cities of Assyria.
- 11Genesis 11: The Tower of Babel
United by one language, people build a city and tower to make a name for themselves, but the Lord confuses their language and scatters them. The chapter then traces Shem's line to Terah, whose son Abram marries Sarai, who is barren, and moves with his family toward Canaan.
