Matthew traces Jesus' family line from Abraham through David to Joseph, showing him to be the promised heir. An angel tells Joseph that Mary's child is from the Holy Spirit, to be named Jesus since he will rescue his people from their sins.
- 2Matthew 2: The Visit of the Magi
Wise men from the east follow a star to worship the newborn King in Bethlehem, while Herod plots to kill him. Warned in a dream, Joseph flees with Mary and Jesus to Egypt, Herod slaughters Bethlehem's boys, and the family later settles in Nazareth.
- 3Luke 1: The Births of John and Jesus Foretold
Luke writes an orderly account so Theophilus may be certain of what he was taught. Gabriel announces the births of John to Zechariah and of Jesus to Mary. Mary visits Elizabeth and sings her song of praise, John is born, and Zechariah prophesies.
- 4Luke 2: The Birth of Jesus
Jesus is born in Bethlehem and laid in a manger, and angels announce the good news to shepherds. At the temple, Simeon and Anna recognize the child as God's salvation. At twelve, Jesus stays behind in his Father's house, amazing the teachers.
