Numbers 9 Devotional

Moving Only When God Moves

“At the LORD’s command the Israelites set out, and at the LORD’s command they camped. As long as the cloud remained over the tabernacle, they remained encamped.”Numbers 9:18 (BSB)

A year after the exodus, Israel keeps the Passover in the wilderness. But some men cannot, because they have touched a dead body, and they ask Moses why they should be left out (9:6-7). God's answer is generous. Anyone unclean or away on a journey may keep the Passover a month later (9:10-11). Even a foreigner who wants to keep it may do so under the same statute (9:14).

The rest of the chapter describes how God leads. The cloud covers the tabernacle by day and looks like fire by night (9:15-16). When it lifts, Israel sets out; when it settles, they camp. Sometimes it stays only overnight, sometimes two days, a month, or longer, and Israel stays as long as it stays (9:21-22). The schedule is never theirs to set. The God who made room for those who missed the Passover is the same God who decides when to move and when to wait. In a season that seems stalled, you can trust the One who sets the pace.

To think about: Are you in a season of waiting or of moving, and what would it look like to trust God's timing in it?
