Numbers 7 Devotional

Not Lost in the Repetition

“When Moses entered the Tent of Meeting to speak with the LORD, he heard the voice speaking to him from between the two cherubim above the mercy seat on the ark of the Testimony. Thus the LORD spoke to him.”Numbers 7:89 (BSB)

Most of this long chapter says the same thing twelve times. When the altar is anointed, each tribal leader brings his offering on his own day: silver, gold, incense, and animals for several kinds of offerings (7:11-17). The gifts are identical. Yet each one is recorded in full, with the leader's name and tribe, from Nahshon of Judah on the first day to Ahira of Naphtali on the twelfth (7:12, 78).

A single summary would have been shorter. Instead the chapter lets every leader's gift stand on its own before giving the totals (7:84-88). No one's offering is simply folded into the crowd. And the chapter does not end with the gifts. It ends with Moses entering the tent and hearing the LORD speak to him from above the mercy seat (7:89). Hebrews says God is not unjust and will not overlook the love his people show in serving others (Hebrews 6:10). What you bring, even when it looks like everyone else's, is seen by the God who speaks.

To think about: What ordinary act of service have you assumed God overlooks because it looks like everyone else's?

About Numbers 7: The Leaders' Offerings

When the tabernacle is anointed, the tribal leaders bring six carts and twelve oxen for the Levites' work. Then over twelve days, each leader presents an identical offering for the dedication of the altar, and the Lord speaks to Moses from between the cherubim.
