What warning did God give about the Kohathites and the holy objects they carried?
Answer: They must never lay hands on them, on pain of death
The Kohathites were trusted with carrying the holiest objects, yet they were forbidden to touch the objects themselves on pain of death (4:15). That is why the priests covered everything first and the poles were put in place. The seriousness of this command is seen later when Uzzah reached out to steady the ark and God put him to death (2 Samuel 6:6-7). David then admitted that they had not sought God about the order He had prescribed (1 Chronicles 15:13). God's holiness is not something to handle casually, and Hebrews still calls believers to worship Him reverently and with awe (Hebrews 12:28-29).
- Numbers 4:15 (BSB)“When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy objects and all their equipment, as soon as the camp is ready to move, the Kohathites shall come and do the carrying. But they must not touch the holy objects, or they will die. These are the transportation duties of the Kohathites regarding the Tent of Meeting.”The Kohathites carry the covered objects but must not touch them.
- 2 Samuel 6:6-7 (BSB)“When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen had stumbled. And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and God struck him down on the spot for his irreverence, and he died there beside the ark of God.”Uzzah died when he took hold of the ark as the oxen stumbled.
- 1 Chronicles 15:13 (BSB)“It was because you Levites were not with us the first time that the LORD our God burst forth in anger against us. For we did not consult Him about the proper order.””David recognized that the LORD burst out because the proper order was not followed.
- Hebrews 12:28-29 (BSB)“Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us be filled with gratitude, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe. “For our God is a consuming fire.””God is still to be worshiped with reverence and awe.

What sanction attaches to the Kohathites' handling of the holy furnishings in 4:15?
Answer: Death if they lay hands on the objects
The Kohathites bear the most holy objects but may not touch them, under penalty of death (4:15). The priestly covering and the poles make lawful transport possible. Uzzah's death beside the ark (2 Samuel 6:6-7) shows the penalty was not theoretical, and David traced that judgment to Israel's failure to seek God about the prescribed order (1 Chronicles 15:13). The new covenant does not abolish reverence: God remains a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:28-29).

What did the priests use as the first covering placed over the ark?
Answer: The inner veil
The ark was the most sacred object in the tabernacle. To prepare it for travel, the priests took down the curtain (veil) that hung before the inner room of the tabernacle and used that very curtain as the ark's first wrapping. Over it went fine leather and then a cloth of solid blue, and the carrying poles were put in place (4:5-6; Exodus 25:14-15). So the ark stayed veiled even on the road. Hebrews says this arrangement, with a curtain barring the inner room, showed that entry into God's presence was not yet open (Hebrews 9:8), and that Jesus has now opened a fresh, living path by means of His own body, which Hebrews likens to that curtain (Hebrews 10:19-20).
- Numbers 4:5-6 (BSB)“Whenever the camp sets out, Aaron and his sons are to go in, take down the veil of the curtain, and cover the ark of the Testimony with it. They are to place over this a covering of fine leather, spread a solid blue cloth over it, and insert its poles.”The ark is wrapped first in the curtain that screened the Most Holy Place, then in leather and blue cloth.
- Exodus 25:14-15 (BSB)“Insert the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, in order to carry it. The poles are to remain in the rings of the ark; they must not be removed.”The ark was designed to be carried by poles through rings on its sides.
- Hebrews 9:8 (BSB)“By this arrangement the Holy Spirit was showing that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still standing.”The curtain and first tabernacle signaled that the way into the Most Holy Place was not yet opened.
- Hebrews 10:19-20 (BSB)“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way opened for us through the curtain of His body,”Believers now enter the Most Holy Place by Jesus' blood through the curtain of His body.

Which item served as the innermost wrapping of the ark for transport?
Answer: The screening veil
The priests lowered the veil that screened the inner sanctuary and wrapped the ark in it, adding fine leather and an outer cloth of solid blue before inserting the poles (4:5-6; Exodus 25:14-15). The ark thus remained veiled even in transit. Hebrews reads the tabernacle arrangement, with its veiled inner sanctuary, as the Holy Spirit's testimony that access was not yet disclosed (Hebrews 9:8), an access now opened by means of Christ's body, the true veil (Hebrews 10:19-20).

Which of Aaron's sons was put in charge of the lamp oil, incense, regular grain offering, and oil for anointing?
Answer: Eleazar
Eleazar, Aaron's son, was given charge of the lamp oil, the sweet incense, the regular grain offering, and oil for anointing, along with oversight of the whole tabernacle and its holy things (4:16). Chapter 3 also names him as chief over the Levite leaders (3:32). Nadab and Abihu had already died, leaving Eleazar and Ithamar as the priests serving with Aaron (3:4), and Ithamar directed the other two clans (4:28, 33). Eleazar would later succeed his father as high priest.
- Numbers 4:16 (BSB)“Eleazar son of Aaron the priest shall oversee the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the daily grain offering, and the anointing oil. He has oversight of the entire tabernacle and everything in it, including the holy objects and their utensils.””Eleazar is assigned the oil, incense, daily grain offering, anointing oil, and oversight of the whole tabernacle.
- Numbers 3:32 (BSB)“The chief of the leaders of the Levites was Eleazar son of Aaron the priest; he oversaw those responsible for the duties of the sanctuary.”Eleazar was also chief over the leaders of the Levites.
- Numbers 3:4 (BSB)“Nadab and Abihu, however, died in the presence of the LORD when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD in the Wilderness of Sinai. And since they had no sons, only Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.”Eleazar and Ithamar were the sons who served as priests alongside Aaron.
Theological
To whom does 4:16 assign the lamp oil, incense, regular grain offering, anointing oil, and oversight of the whole sanctuary?
Answer: Eleazar
Eleazar receives custody of the sanctuary's consumables (lamp oil, incense, the regular grain offering, anointing oil) and general oversight of the tabernacle and its holy objects (4:16), consistent with his role as chief over the Levite leaders (3:32). With Nadab and Abihu dead (3:4), Eleazar holds oversight of the whole sanctuary, while Ithamar directs the Gershonites and Merarites (4:28, 33).

How were the Levites' individual jobs decided, according to the chapter's closing verse?
Answer: Each was assigned his task at God's command
The chapter ends by saying that the Levites were counted as the LORD commanded by Moses and that each man was given his own work and load (4:49). Even individual items were assigned by name (4:32). Nothing about carrying God's dwelling was left to chance or personal preference. Paul uses a similar idea for the church: God places each member in the body as He wills (1 Corinthians 12:18), and worship should be fitting and orderly (1 Corinthians 14:40).
- Numbers 4:49 (BSB)“At the LORD’s command through Moses they were numbered, and each one was assigned his work and burden, as the LORD had commanded Moses.”Each Levite was assigned his particular work and load by God's command.
- Numbers 4:32 (BSB)“and the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, and ropes, including all their equipment and everything related to their use. You shall assign by name the items that they are responsible to carry.”The Merarites' items were assigned to specific men by name.
- 1 Corinthians 12:18 (BSB)“But in fact, God has arranged the members of the body, every one of them, according to His design.”God arranges each member of the body as He chooses.
- 1 Corinthians 14:40 (BSB)“But everything must be done in a proper and orderly manner.”Worship is to be orderly.
Theological
According to 4:49, how was each Levite's service determined?
Answer: By appointment as the LORD ordered
The census closes by emphasizing divine appointment: by the LORD's order each man received his own service and burden (4:49), down to items assigned by name (4:32). The service of God's house is ordered by God, not by self-selection. Paul applies the same principle of sovereign placement to the members of Christ's body (1 Corinthians 12:18) and requires order in worship (1 Corinthians 14:40).

What were the Gershonites responsible for carrying?
Answer: The curtains, coverings, and hangings
The Gershonites carried the fabric parts of the sanctuary: the tent curtains and the leather covering over them, the entrance curtain, the courtyard hangings and gate curtain, and the ropes (4:25-26; 3:25-26). Because these loads were bulky, Moses later gave them a pair of carts with four oxen (7:7). The holy furniture went to the Kohathites, and the frames and bases to the Merarites.
- Numbers 4:25-26 (BSB)“They are to carry the curtains of the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting with the covering of fine leather over it, the curtains for the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the curtains of the courtyard, and the curtains for the entrance at the gate of the courtyard that surrounds the tabernacle and altar, along with their ropes and all the equipment for their service. The Gershonites will do all that needs to be done with these items.”The Gershonites carry the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, courtyard hangings, and ropes.
- Numbers 3:25-26 (BSB)“The duties of the Gershonites at the Tent of Meeting were the tabernacle and tent, its covering, the curtain for the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard that surrounds the tabernacle and altar, and the cords—all the service for these items.”The earlier summary gives the Gershonites the same fabric and cord duties.
- Numbers 7:7 (BSB)“He gave the Gershonites two carts and four oxen, as their service required,”The Gershonites received two carts and four oxen for their load.
Theological
Which portion of the tabernacle does 4:25-26 assign to the Gershonites?
Answer: Its textile curtains and coverings
The Gershonite charge is the sanctuary's fabric: tent curtains, the leather covering, the entrance screens, the courtyard hangings, and the cords (4:25-26), matching the summary of 3:25-26. The bulk of these materials explains the allotment of a pair of carts with four oxen (7:7). The division of labor keeps each clan to its appointed sphere.

Who supervised the work of both the Gershonites and the Merarites?
Answer: Ithamar, Aaron's son
Ithamar, Aaron's son, directed both the Gershonites (4:28) and the Merarites (4:33). He had earlier overseen the Levites' record of the tabernacle materials (Exodus 38:21), and he is again named over the Merarites when the carts are handed out (7:8). Eleazar's charge was the oil, the incense, and oversight of the tabernacle's holy things (4:16), while Elizaphan was the tribal leader of the Kohathite families, not a priest (3:30).
- Numbers 4:28 (BSB)“This is the service of the Gershonite clans at the Tent of Meeting, and their duties shall be under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.”The Gershonites serve under Ithamar's direction.
- Numbers 4:33 (BSB)“This is the service of the Merarite clans according to all their work at the Tent of Meeting, under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.””The Merarites also serve under Ithamar's direction.
- Exodus 38:21 (BSB)“This is the inventory for the tabernacle, the tabernacle of the Testimony, as recorded at Moses’ command by the Levites under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.”Ithamar had already directed the Levites in recording the tabernacle inventory.
- Numbers 7:8 (BSB)“and he gave the Merarites four carts and eight oxen, as their service required, all under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.”Ithamar's direction over the Merarites is repeated when the carts are distributed.
Theological
Who held oversight of both the Gershonite and Merarite service?
Answer: Ithamar, Aaron's son
Ithamar directs both the Gershonites (4:28) and the Merarites (4:33), continuing the supervisory role he held over the Levites' tabernacle inventory (Exodus 38:21) and repeated in the cart allotment (7:8). Eleazar's charge centers on the sanctuary and its holy objects (4:16), and Elizaphan is the Kohathite family chief rather than a priest (3:30).

What did the Kohathites' work at the tabernacle concern, according to 4:4?
Answer: The most holy furnishings
Kohath's clan is counted first, though Gershon is listed first among Levi's sons (3:17), because its work concerned the holiest furnishings of the tabernacle (4:4): the ark, table, lampstand, altars, and their accompanying vessels (3:31). Because these objects were so holy, the Kohathites were given no carts; they carried them on their shoulders (7:9). Centuries later, after Uzzah was struck down for grasping the ark (1 Chronicles 13:9-10), David had the Levites bear it with poles on their shoulders, following Moses' instructions, when it was brought to Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 15:13-15).
- Numbers 4:4 (BSB)“This service of the Kohathites at the Tent of Meeting regards the most holy things.”The Kohathites' assignment concerns the sanctuary's holiest furnishings.
- Numbers 3:31 (BSB)“Their duties were the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the articles of the sanctuary used with them, and the curtain—all the service for these items.”The earlier summary lists the ark, table, lampstand, altars, and sanctuary articles as Kohathite duties.
- Numbers 7:9 (BSB)“But he did not give any to the Kohathites, since they were to carry on their shoulders the holy objects for which they were responsible.”The Kohathites received no carts because they carried their holy objects on their shoulders.
- 1 Chronicles 13:9-10 (BSB)“When they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark, because the oxen had stumbled. And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and He struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.”Uzzah died when he took hold of the ark while it was being moved.
- 1 Chronicles 15:13-15 (BSB)“It was because you Levites were not with us the first time that the LORD our God burst forth in anger against us. For we did not consult Him about the proper order.” So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel. And the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD.”After the LORD burst forth the first time, David had the Levites carry the ark on their shoulders with poles as Moses commanded.
Theological
In 4:4, what is the defining object of the Kohathite service?
Answer: The most holy furnishings
Kohath is treated ahead of Gershon, who is named first among Levi's sons (3:17), because the Kohathite charge is the sanctuary's holiest furniture (4:4): ark, table, lampstand, altars, and their utensils (3:31). Holiness governs the mode of transport as well: no carts were issued to the Kohathites, who bore these objects on their shoulders (7:9), a regulation David later honored after the judgment on Uzzah (1 Chronicles 13:9-10; 15:13-15).

What did the Merarites carry when the camp moved?
Answer: The frames, posts, bases, and pegs
The Merarites carried the heavy framework: the tabernacle's frames and crossbars, its posts and bases, plus the courtyard posts, sockets, pegs, and cords (4:31-32; 3:36-37). Each man was told by name which pieces he was to carry (4:32). With the heaviest loads, they received twice as many carts and oxen, double what the Gershonites were given (7:8).
- Numbers 4:31-32 (BSB)“This is the duty for all their service at the Tent of Meeting: to carry the frames of the tabernacle with its crossbars, posts, and bases, and the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, and ropes, including all their equipment and everything related to their use. You shall assign by name the items that they are responsible to carry.”The Merarites carry the frames, crossbars, posts, bases, pegs, and ropes, each item assigned by name.
- Numbers 3:36-37 (BSB)“The duties assigned to the sons of Merari were the tabernacle’s frames, crossbars, posts, bases, and all its equipment—all the service for these items, as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, and ropes.”The earlier summary assigns the same structural pieces to Merari.
- Numbers 7:8 (BSB)“and he gave the Merarites four carts and eight oxen, as their service required, all under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.”The Merarites received four carts and eight oxen, under Ithamar's direction.
Theological
What does 4:31-32 give the Merarites to transport?
Answer: The structural frames, posts, bases, and pegs
Merari's clan carries the structural components: the tent's frames and crossbars, its posts and sockets, and the courtyard's posts, pegs, and ropes (4:31-32; 3:36-37), with items assigned to specific men by name (4:32). Their heavier load is reflected in the doubled allotment of carts and oxen given to them (7:8).
Which Levite clan had the largest number of men aged thirty to fifty?
Answer: The Merarites, with 3,200
The counts were 2,750 Kohathites (4:36), 2,630 Gershonites (4:40), and 3,200 Merarites (4:44). The Merarites, the smallest clan in the chapter 3 count of all males, had the largest working force here. Fittingly, their share was the heaviest: the frames, posts, and bases of the tabernacle (3:36-37), which needed twice the carts and oxen given to Gershon (7:8).
- Numbers 4:36 (BSB)“And those numbered by their clans totaled 2,750.”The Kohathite working men numbered 2,750.
- Numbers 4:40 (BSB)“And those numbered by their clans and families totaled 2,630.”The Gershonite working men numbered 2,630.
- Numbers 4:44 (BSB)“The men registered by their clans numbered 3,200.”The Merarite working men numbered 3,200.
- Numbers 3:36-37 (BSB)“The duties assigned to the sons of Merari were the tabernacle’s frames, crossbars, posts, bases, and all its equipment—all the service for these items, as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, and ropes.”The Merarites' heavy structural duties are listed in the earlier census.
- Numbers 7:8 (BSB)“and he gave the Merarites four carts and eight oxen, as their service required, all under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.”The Merarites needed the most carts and oxen for their loads.

Which clan's working force was largest in the chapter 4 census?
Answer: Merari, at 3,200 men
The enrollment gives Kohath 2,750 (4:36), Gershon 2,630 (4:40), and Merari 3,200 (4:44). Although Merari was the smallest clan in the full count of chapter 3, it supplied the largest labor force, suited to its charge of the heavy structural components (3:36-37) and reflected in its larger allotment of carts and oxen (7:8).

True or False: The Kohathites were allowed a quick glance at the sacred furnishings as long as they did not touch them.
Answer: False
This is false. The Kohathites were forbidden to enter and view the sacred furnishings for even an instant, or they would die (4:20). Seeing was forbidden as well as touching. Later, men of Beth-shemesh died when they looked into the ark (1 Samuel 6:19), and God told Moses that nobody may see His face and live (Exodus 33:20). What was closed to the Kohathites is now open to believers: through Jesus' blood, God's people may draw near with full assurance (Hebrews 10:19-22).
- Numbers 4:20 (BSB)“But the Kohathites are not to go in and look at the holy objects, even for a moment, or they will die.””The Kohathites may not even briefly look at the holy objects.
- 1 Samuel 6:19 (BSB)“But God struck down some of the people of Beth-shemesh because they looked inside the ark of the LORD. He struck down seventy men, and the people mourned because the LORD had struck them with a great slaughter.”God struck men of Beth-shemesh for looking into the ark.
- Exodus 33:20 (BSB)“But He added, “You cannot see My face, for no one can see Me and live.””No one can see God's face and live.
- Hebrews 10:19-22 (BSB)“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way opened for us through the curtain of His body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.”Believers may now draw near to the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus.

True or False: Chapter 4 permits the Kohathites a momentary view of the holy objects, provided they do not handle them.
Answer: False
This is false. The prohibition extends to sight: the Kohathites may not enter to view the sacred furnishings even briefly, on pain of death (4:20). The judgment at Beth-shemesh (1 Samuel 6:19) and the principle that none may see God's face and live (Exodus 33:20) confirm the gravity. The contrast with the new covenant is striking: through Jesus' blood believers enter the inner sanctuary with confidence (Hebrews 10:19-22).

True or False: When Israel was about to break camp, the Kohathites went into the sanctuary themselves to wrap up the holy objects.
Answer: False
This is false. The wrapping was priestly work. Aaron and his priestly sons went in first, took down the inner curtain, and covered each holy object (4:5). Only when the priests had finished covering everything did the Kohathites come to lift and carry (4:15). The Levites served the tabernacle but were not to handle its holiest furnishings directly (18:3). By this time the priests serving with Aaron were his two remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar (3:4).
- Numbers 4:5 (BSB)“Whenever the camp sets out, Aaron and his sons are to go in, take down the veil of the curtain, and cover the ark of the Testimony with it.”Aaron and his sons go in first when the camp is about to move.
- Numbers 4:15 (BSB)“When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy objects and all their equipment, as soon as the camp is ready to move, the Kohathites shall come and do the carrying. But they must not touch the holy objects, or they will die. These are the transportation duties of the Kohathites regarding the Tent of Meeting.”Only after the priests finish covering everything do the Kohathites come to carry.
- Numbers 18:3 (BSB)“And they shall attend to your duties and to all the duties of the Tent; but they must not come near to the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, or both they and you will die.”Levites were to serve the Tent but not approach the sanctuary furnishings or the altar.
- Numbers 3:4 (BSB)“Nadab and Abihu, however, died in the presence of the LORD when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD in the Wilderness of Sinai. And since they had no sons, only Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.”Only Eleazar and Ithamar remained to serve with Aaron as priests after Nadab and Abihu died.

True or False: The Kohathites personally entered the sanctuary to wrap the holy furnishings before a march.
Answer: False
This is false. Covering the holy furnishings was reserved to Aaron and the priests descended from him (4:5); the Kohathites entered the task only after the priests had completed it, and then solely as bearers (4:15). The distinction between priest and Levite is maintained throughout Numbers (18:3), and the priests in view are Aaron with Eleazar and Ithamar, Nadab and Abihu having died for offering unauthorized fire (3:4).

According to chapter 4, what was the age range of the Levites counted for work at the tabernacle?
Answer: Ages thirty through fifty
Chapter 4 is a second census of the Levites, the tribe set apart to care for the tabernacle (God's portable tent of worship). Unlike the count in chapter 3, which included every male a month old and up, this count is limited to men thirty through fifty, the ones fit for the heavy work of taking down, carrying, and setting up the tabernacle (4:3, 47). Numbers 8:24-26 gives twenty-five as the entry age and says that at fifty a Levite stepped back from the hard labor but could still help his brothers. In David's day, when the tabernacle no longer had to be carried, the starting age was twenty (1 Chronicles 23:24-26). The work was demanding, so God matched it to men in their strength.
- Numbers 4:3 (BSB)“men from thirty to fifty years old—everyone who is qualified to serve in the work at the Tent of Meeting.”The census of working Levites counts only men within a set age range.
- Numbers 4:47 (BSB)“from thirty to fifty years old who came to do the work of serving and carrying the Tent of Meeting.”The combined count again uses the same age range for all three clans.
- Numbers 8:24-26 (BSB)““This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years of age or older shall enter to perform the service in the work at the Tent of Meeting. But at the age of fifty, they must retire from performing the work and no longer serve. After that, they may assist their brothers in fulfilling their duties at the Tent of Meeting, but they themselves are not to do the work. This is how you are to assign responsibilities to the Levites.””A later instruction sets twenty-five as the entry age and fifty as the age of retirement, with older men still assisting.
- 1 Chronicles 23:24-26 (BSB)“These were the descendants of Levi by their families—the heads of families, registered individually by name—those twenty years of age or older who worked in the service of the house of the LORD. For David had said, “The LORD, the God of Israel, has given rest to His people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem forever. So now the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the articles for its service.””Under David, with the tabernacle no longer carried, the Levites counted for service began at twenty.

What age bracket defines the Levites enrolled for tabernacle labor in chapter 4?
Answer: Men aged thirty through fifty
The census of chapter 4 differs in purpose from that of chapter 3: rather than enumerating every male from a month old for the redemption of the firstborn, it enrolls the working force, men aged thirty through fifty (4:3, 47). Numbers 8:24-26 sets the entry age at twenty-five and has men over fifty retire from the heavy labor while still assisting their brothers. Under David, once God had given His people rest and there was no more need to transport the tabernacle, the age was lowered to twenty (1 Chronicles 23:24-26). The age limits reflect the physical burden of transporting the sanctuary.
Why did God tell Moses and Aaron to have the priests assign each Kohathite his task and load (4:18-19)?
Answer: So the Kohathites would not be destroyed
God did not want the Kohathite clans wiped out by coming too close to His holy things. So He gave a merciful arrangement: the priests would enter and give every man exactly what to do and what to carry, so that the Kohathites could serve and live (4:18-19). The rules were not meant to trap the Levites but to protect them, just as the Levites' encampment surrounding the tabernacle kept wrath from falling on Israel (1:53). In Christ, believers now come boldly before God's gracious throne, because He has made the way (Hebrews 4:16).
- Numbers 4:18-19 (BSB)““Do not allow the Kohathite tribal clans to be cut off from among the Levites. In order that they may live and not die when they come near the most holy things, do this for them: Aaron and his sons are to go in and assign each man his task and what he is to carry.”God orders protective arrangements so the Kohathites are not destroyed.
- Numbers 1:53 (BSB)“But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Israel. So the Levites are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.””The Levites camped around the tabernacle so that wrath would not fall on Israel.
- Hebrews 4:16 (BSB)“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”Through Christ, believers approach God's throne of grace with confidence.

What purpose does God state in 4:18-19 for having the priests assign each Kohathite his task?
Answer: To preserve the Kohathites from destruction
The regulation is protective: God forbids that the Kohathite clans be cut off and prescribes priestly direction of every man's task so that they survive when approaching the holiest objects (4:18-19). The same logic governs the Levitical cordon around the tabernacle, which kept wrath from breaking out on the congregation (1:53). The law's boundaries guard sinners from a holiness they could not otherwise survive; in Christ the barrier gives way to confident access to the gracious throne of God (Hebrews 4:16).

What was the combined count of Levites aged thirty to fifty counted for tabernacle work?
Answer: 8,580
Moses and Aaron, with Israel's leaders, counted 8,580 Levites of working age (4:46-48), the sum of the three clans (2,750 + 2,630 + 3,200). This is much smaller than the 22,000 in chapter 3, which counted every male one month old and up (3:39). These 8,580 men carried out the charge first given to the tribe of Levi: to care for and transport the tabernacle and everything belonging to it (1:50).
- Numbers 4:46-48 (BSB)“So Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of Israel numbered by their clans and families all the Levites from thirty to fifty years old who came to do the work of serving and carrying the Tent of Meeting. And the number of men was 8,580.”The combined count of working Levites is 8,580.
- Numbers 3:39 (BSB)“The total number of Levites that Moses and Aaron counted by their clans at the LORD’s command, including all the males a month old or more, was 22,000.”The earlier count of all Levite males a month old and up was 22,000.
- Numbers 1:50 (BSB)“Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it.”The Levites were appointed over the tabernacle, its furnishings, and all that belonged to it.

What total does 4:48 give for the Levites enrolled for service?
Answer: 8,580
The combined enrollment is 8,580 (4:46-48), the sum of Kohath's 2,750, Gershon's 2,630, and Merari's 3,200. It should be distinguished from the 22,000 of 3:39, a count of all males from a month old. This labor force discharges the charge laid on Levi in 1:50 to carry and tend the tabernacle and its furnishings.
