Promises with Borders

““Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of Canaan, it will be allotted to you as an inheritance with these boundaries:”Numbers 34:2 (BSB)

Before Israel crosses the Jordan, God draws the map. The southern border runs from the Wilderness of Zin past Kadesh-barnea to the Brook of Egypt. The western border is the Great Sea. The northern line reaches Lebo-hamath, and the eastern runs down the Jordan to the Salt Sea (34:3-12). Then God names the men who will divide the rest: Eleazar, Joshua, and a leader from each tribe (34:17-18).

The precision is the point. God's promise is not a vague hope of somewhere better. It has edges. The southern line even passes Kadesh-barnea (34:4), the place where the spies once set out and where their fathers refused to go up (32:8). And the first tribal leader named is Caleb son of Jephunneh (34:19), one of the two who had trusted God there. A generation later the land that was refused is being mapped for their children. God does not shrink his promises after his people fail. The gifts he promises you are just as definite as the borders he drew for Israel.

To think about: Which of God's promises have you been treating as vague, and how might it change things to see it as definite?
