Numbers 31 Devotional

The Reckoning for Peor

Numbers 31 is one of the hardest chapters in Scripture. God commands Moses to punish Midian on Israel's behalf (31:2). The reason is stated plainly: the Midianites, through Balaam's counsel, led Israel into unfaithfulness at Peor, and a plague struck the LORD's people (31:16; 25:18). Twelve thousand men go out with Phinehas and kill every male, along with Midian's five kings and Balaam (31:5-8). Then Moses orders the boys and the women who had been with a man put to death as well (31:17). The text does not soften this, and neither should we.

Even after a war God commanded, every soldier who killed or touched the dead must stay outside the camp and be purified (31:19-24). Death still defiles. When the officers find that not one soldier is missing, they bring gold to make atonement and as a memorial before the LORD (31:49-50, 54). God's judgment on those who deliberately led his people into idolatry is real. And even in victory, his people stand before him by grace, not by merit.

To think about: Where in your own successes do you need to respond like the officers, with gratitude and humility rather than pride?

About Numbers 31: Vengeance on Midian

The Lord commands Israel to take vengeance on Midian for leading them into sin at Peor. A thousand men from each tribe defeat Midian, killing its kings and Balaam. The captives and spoil are purified and divided, and the officers bring a gold offering because no soldier was lost.
