Numbers 25 Devotional

The Danger Within the Camp

““Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the Israelites; for he was zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in My zeal.”Numbers 25:11 (BSB)

Balaam could not curse Israel, but Israel brings disaster on itself. At Shittim the men join in sexual immorality with Moabite women and bow down to Baal of Peor (25:1-3). Later we learn this came through Balaam's counsel (31:16). What a hired prophet could not do from outside, compromise did inside the camp. The LORD orders the leaders executed, and a plague kills 24,000 (25:4, 9).

While the people weep at the Tent of Meeting, a Simeonite leader brings a Midianite woman to his family in full view (25:6, 14). Phinehas kills them both, and the plague stops (25:7-8). God says Phinehas's zeal for God's honor turned back his anger, and he gives Phinehas a covenant of peace (25:11-12). This is violent and hard to read. It shows how seriously God takes idolatry among his people, the real danger all along. The God who would not let Balaam curse Israel would not let idolatry quietly destroy them either, and his jealous love calls you to guard what you welcome in.

To think about: What quiet compromise have you welcomed that may be doing more harm than any outside opposition?

About Numbers 25: Idolatry at Peor and Phinehas

Israel commits sexual immorality with Moabite women and worships Baal of Peor, bringing a plague. When an Israelite man brazenly brings a Midianite woman into his tent, Phinehas kills them both, stopping the plague, and God gives him a covenant of lasting priesthood.
