Numbers 12 Devotional

When God Answers for You

“Now Moses was a very humble man, more so than any man on the face of the earth.”Numbers 12:3 (BSB)

Miriam and Aaron start with Moses' Cushite wife, but their real complaint comes out quickly: the LORD speaks through them too, not only through Moses (12:1-2). The narrator adds that Moses was the most humble man on earth (12:3). He says nothing in his own defense. God was listening (12:2).

God calls the three of them out to the tent and answers for Moses himself. Prophets receive visions and dreams, but with Moses, his faithful servant, God speaks face to face (12:6-8). When the cloud lifts, Miriam's skin is white with disease (12:10). Then the brother she criticized cries out to God to heal her (12:13). God's answer is discipline with an end: seven days outside the camp, and then she may come back (12:14). And the whole people does not move on until Miriam is brought back in (12:15). The humble do not have to fight for their own honor, because God sees and answers. That frees you to pray for the very people who speak against you.

To think about: Who has spoken against you that you could pray for today instead of defending yourself?

About Numbers 12: Miriam and Aaron Oppose Moses

Miriam and Aaron criticize Moses over his Cushite wife and claim the Lord speaks through them too. The Lord declares that he speaks with Moses face to face, the humblest man on earth, and strikes Miriam with skin disease until Moses prays and she spends seven days outside the camp.
