Nehemiah 4 Devotional

Prayer and a Posted Guard

“So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them day and night.”Nehemiah 4:9 (BSB)

As the wall rises, so does the contempt. Sanballat mocks the feeble Jews, and Tobiah jokes that a fox could knock their wall down (4:1-3). He asks God to hear how they are despised and to deal with the mockers himself (4:4-5). The wall is joined to half its height (4:6). Then the scorn becomes a plot to attack, and the builders grow weary at the rubble still to clear (4:7-12).

Verse 9 holds two things together: they prayed to God, and they posted a guard day and night. Prayer did not make them passive, and the guard did not replace prayer. Nehemiah tells the people not to be afraid but to remember the Lord, great and awesome (4:14), and the enemies learn that God has frustrated their scheme (4:15). From then on the builders work with weapons close at hand, confident that God will fight for them (4:16-20). Trusting God does not mean ignoring danger. It means facing it while remembering who is great, and doing the next faithful thing.

To think about: In a pressure you are facing, what would it look like for you to both pray and take the next sensible step?

About Nehemiah 4: Building the Wall Under Threat

Sanballat and Tobiah ridicule the Jews rebuilding Jerusalem’s wall, and Nehemiah prays for God to judge their scorn. When enemies plot an attack, the people pray and set guards, God foils the plan, and the builders work armed, half building and half on watch.
