Micah 7 Devotional
Sins Hurled Into the Deep
“Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance—who does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in loving devotion?”Micah 7:18 (BSB)
Micah feels like someone searching a picked-over vineyard and finding no fruit. The godly have vanished, everyone hunts his neighbor, and even families turn on one another (7:1-6). But Micah resolves to look to the LORD and wait for the God of his salvation, confident that God will hear him (7:7). Though he has fallen, he will rise, and though he sits in darkness, the LORD will be his light (7:8). He accepts God's discipline for his sin, trusting God to plead his case (7:9).
The book closes in wonder. Who is a God like this, who pardons iniquity and does not hold on to his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love (7:18)? He will have compassion again, tread down their iniquities, and hurl all their sins into the depths of the sea (7:19). He will keep the promises he swore to Abraham and Jacob long ago (7:20). Your sins are not stored on a shelf for later. When God forgives, he throws them where they cannot be retrieved.
To think about: What sin do you keep pulling back up that God has already cast into the depths?
