Micah 2 Devotional

The King Who Breaks Through

“One who breaks open the way will go up before them; they will break through the gate, and go out by it. Their King will pass through before them, the LORD as their leader.”Micah 2:13 (BSB)

Micah exposes men who lie awake planning evil and carry it out at dawn because they have the power to do it. They covet fields and seize them, take houses, and rob families of their inheritance (2:1-2). So the LORD announces his own plan: a disaster from which they cannot free their necks (2:3). Those who grabbed land will lose their own.

The people do not want to hear it. Stop preaching, they tell the prophets; disgrace will not overtake us (2:6). God answers that his words do good to the one who walks uprightly (2:7). Then, unexpectedly, comes a promise. God will gather the remnant of Israel like sheep in a pen, and one who breaks open the way will go up before them. Their King will pass through ahead of them, the LORD at their head (2:12-13). The God who opposes the powerful also leads the scattered out. A word that confronts you may be the first step toward following him home.

To think about: Do you prefer preaching that comforts you over preaching that confronts you, and why?

About Micah 2: Land Grabbers and False Preachers

Micah condemns powerful men who scheme to seize their neighbors' fields and homes, and the LORD plans a disaster that will take their own land. Opponents tell the true prophets to stop warning, and the people would welcome a lying preacher, yet the LORD promises to gather a remnant and lead them out as King.
