Matthew 7 Devotional

A Foundation That Holds

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”Matthew 7:24 (BSB)

Jesus closes the Sermon on the Mount with a series of contrasts: two gates, two kinds of trees, two kinds of followers, two houses. The most sobering is the third. Many will call him Lord and point to great things done in his name, and he will tell them he never knew them (7:21-23). Religious activity is not the same as belonging to him.

What holds, then? The same rain, floods, and wind beat against two houses. One stands, not because its builder was stronger, but because it rests on rock (7:24-25). Building on rock means hearing Jesus' words and acting on them, leaning your weight on what he says rather than on your own record. And in the middle of the chapter he shows the heart behind those words: a Father who gives good gifts to those who ask, far more surely than any parent feeds a hungry child (7:7-11). Obedience starts there, with asking. Whatever storm is beating on you, stand on his word and ask him for what you lack.

To think about: What are you leaning on right now besides Jesus' words, and what would it look like to ask your Father for help today?

About Matthew 7: Judging, Asking, and the Two Foundations

Jesus warns against hypocritical judging, invites his hearers to ask, seek, and knock, and gives the Golden Rule. He contrasts the narrow and wide gates, warns of false prophets and empty profession, and closes with the wise and foolish builders.
