Matthew 28 Devotional

With Us to the End

“and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.””Matthew 28:20 (BSB)

As the first day of the week dawns, the ground shakes, an angel rolls back the stone and sits on it, and the guards collapse in fear (28:2-4). The angel tells the women that Jesus has risen, as he had said (28:6). As they run to tell the others, Jesus meets them and calls the disciples who had deserted him his brothers (28:10; see 26:56). The chief priests pay the soldiers to claim the body was stolen (28:11-15), but money cannot put Jesus back in the grave.

On a mountain in Galilee, the eleven worship him, though some still doubt (28:17). Jesus does not wait for their doubts to clear. He comes to them, claims authority over heaven and earth, and sends them to make disciples among all the nations (28:18-19). Then he gives his final word in Matthew: he will be with them every day, until this age is over (28:20). The mission rests on his authority and presence, not on the strength of their faith. Whatever he gives you to do, you will not do it alone.

To think about: What task in front of you feels too big for your faith, and how does Jesus' promise to be with you change how you approach it?
