Matthew 24 Devotional
Ready at an Unknown Hour
“Blessed is that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.”Matthew 24:46 (BSB)
As the disciples admire the temple buildings, Jesus tells them every stone will be thrown down (24:1-2). Then he describes what is coming: deceivers using his name, wars and famines, persecution, love growing cold, and a time of distress unlike any before it (24:4-21). Yet God's care stays in view. Those days will be shortened for the sake of God's chosen people, and the Son of Man will send his angels to gather them from every direction (24:22, 24:31).
What Jesus will not give is a date. No one knows the day or hour, not the angels, not even the Son, only the Father (24:36). So instead of calculation he calls for readiness. A servant put in charge of a household keeps feeding the others on time, and he is blessed when his master returns and finds him at it (24:45-46). Watching for Christ looks less like predicting and more like faithfulness in the work already given. Because his return is certain, you can spend today caring well for those in your charge.
To think about: What ordinary responsibility has God placed in your hands that you could carry out faithfully today as you wait for him?
