Luke 24 Devotional
The Story Was About Him
“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself.”Luke 24:27 (BSB)
Two disciples walk away from Jerusalem with sad faces, talking about the man they had hoped would redeem Israel (24:17-21). They have heard the women's report of an empty tomb, but it has only left them astonished (24:22-24). Then Jesus himself comes alongside them, though they are kept from recognizing him (24:15-16). Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he walks them through what the Scriptures say about him, that suffering came first for the Christ and glory after (24:26-27).
Their eyes are opened when he breaks bread with them, and later he opens the minds of the gathered disciples to understand the Scriptures (24:31, 24:45). Understanding is his gift, not their achievement. He shows them his hands and feet, eats in front of them, and sends them to proclaim repentance and forgiveness in his name to all nations (24:39-47). The whole Bible was leading to a crucified and risen Savior. Each time you open it, you can ask the risen Christ to open your eyes to see him there.
To think about: When you read the Bible, are you looking mainly for rules and lessons, or for Jesus himself, and what might change if you asked him to show you?
