Luke 22 Devotional

Held Through the Sifting

“But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.””Luke 22:32 (BSB)

At the Passover table Jesus gives his disciples bread and a cup, his body and blood given for them in a new covenant (22:19-20). Soon they are arguing about who is greatest (22:24). Then he turns to Simon. Satan has asked to shake them all like grain, but Jesus has prayed for Simon that his faith will not fail, and he tells him what to do once he has turned back (22:31-32).

Peter insists he is ready to die with Jesus (22:33). Hours later, in a courtyard, he denies three times that he even knows him. As the rooster crows, the Lord turns and looks at Peter, and Peter goes outside and weeps (22:60-62). Jesus saw the fall coming and prayed for Peter before it happened. Peter's return would rest on Jesus' prayer, not on Peter's strength. That same Lord now lives to intercede for all who come to God through him (Hebrews 7:25). Your failures do not cancel his prayers, and you can turn back to him and then strengthen others.

To think about: After a failure, what would it look like to trust that Jesus has prayed for you, and to turn back and strengthen someone else?

About Luke 22: The Last Supper and the Arrest

Judas agrees to betray Jesus, who shares the Passover and gives the bread and cup of the new covenant. The disciples argue about greatness, Jesus prays in agony on the Mount of Olives, and he is arrested, denied by Peter, and questioned by the council.
