Luke 2 Devotional
Salvation Small Enough to Hold
“Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord!”Luke 2:11 (BSB)
The Savior arrives with almost no ceremony. Mary wraps her newborn son and lays him in a manger, because there is no room for them in the inn (2:7). The first to hear are shepherds keeping watch at night. An angel announces that a Savior has been born, Christ the Lord, and the sign is a baby lying in a manger (2:11-12). The glory of heaven points them to an animal's feeding trough.
Later, in the temple, an old man named Simeon takes the child in his arms and blesses God, because in him he has seen the salvation God prepared for every people (2:28-32). An elderly widow named Anna gives thanks and speaks of the child to all who are waiting (2:36-38). God did not announce his Son to the powerful first. He told shepherds, an old man, and a widow. The shepherds went home praising God, because everything was just as they had been told (2:20). You do not need standing or importance to come near to Jesus.
To think about: What makes you feel too ordinary or unimportant to come near to Jesus, and how does the welcome given to the shepherds answer that?
