Luke 19 Devotional

Sought Out by Name

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.””Luke 19:10 (BSB)

Zacchaeus, a rich chief tax collector, wants to see who Jesus is. Too short to see over the crowd, he runs ahead and climbs a sycamore tree (19:2-4). When Jesus reaches the spot, he looks up, calls Zacchaeus by name, and tells him to hurry down, because he must stay at his house today (19:5). Zacchaeus welcomes him joyfully, while the crowd grumbles that Jesus is a sinner's guest (19:6-7).

Jesus' welcome comes first. Only then does Zacchaeus promise half his possessions to the poor and fourfold repayment to anyone he cheated (19:8). His generosity is the fruit of being found, not the price of it. Jesus announces that salvation has come to this house, and he explains why: the Son of Man came to search for the lost and rescue them (19:9-10). Zacchaeus was looking for Jesus, but Jesus had come looking for him. The one who calls you by name is still seeking, and you can answer him today.

To think about: How might it change your view of yourself to know that Jesus came looking for you before you ever went looking for him?
