Joshua 23 Devotional
The God Who Fought for You
““and you have seen everything that the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake, because it was the LORD your God who fought for you.”Joshua 23:3 (BSB)
The aged Joshua gathers Israel's leaders for a final word. His speech begins with what they have seen: the LORD their God fought for them (23:3). He drove out great nations, and a single Israelite could rout a thousand, because God fought for them as he promised (23:9-10).
From that grace comes the charge. Hold fast to the LORD, stay away from the gods of the nations, and above all, take care to love him (23:8, 11). Then Joshua says something sobering. Just as every good promise has come true, every warning will too. If Israel turns to other gods, the LORD will remove them from the good land he gave (23:14-16). The faithfulness that keeps promises also keeps warnings, which is a reason to take all of his word seriously. Hebrews urges believers to hold firmly to their hope, since God keeps his word (Hebrews 10:23). The God who fought for you is worthy of your love, and even his warnings are given for your good.
To think about: Is there a warning in Scripture you have been treating more lightly than its promises?
