Joshua 21 Devotional

Every Good Word Kept

“Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel had failed; everything was fulfilled.”Joshua 21:45 (BSB)

The Levites come to Shiloh with a reminder. The LORD had commanded through Moses that they be given towns to live in, with pastureland for their animals (21:1-2). So the tribes give forty-eight towns from their own inheritance, assigned by lot to the Levite clans (21:3-8, 41). The tribe with no territory of its own is now spread among all the others.

Then the book pauses to say what all these lists have been showing. The LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to their fathers. He gave them rest on every side, and none of their enemies could stand against them (21:43-44). Every good thing he had promised the house of Israel came true (21:45). This is one of the high points of the book, and it is a statement about God, not about Israel. Paul says all of God's promises are confirmed in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). What God swore to Abraham he kept in Joshua's day, and what he has promised you in his Son he will keep as well.

To think about: Which of God's promises do you most need to remember that he keeps, as you face today?
