Joshua 10 Devotional

The Day the LORD Listened

“There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man, because the LORD fought for Israel.”Joshua 10:14 (BSB)

Five Amorite kings attack Gibeon for making peace with Israel, and Gibeon sends for help (10:4-6). God tells Joshua not to fear, throws the enemy into confusion, and sends hailstones that kill more than the sword does (10:8-11). Then Joshua prays before all Israel, and the sun and moon stand still until the battle is done. The chapter says there has never been a day like it, when the LORD listened to a man's voice, because the LORD fought for Israel (10:12-14).

The rest of the chapter is hard. City after city in the south is taken, and everyone is put to death, as the LORD had commanded (10:28-40). This is judgment on the Amorites, whose wickedness God told Abraham generations earlier he would wait on until it was complete (Genesis 15:16). Judgment came only after long patience, and it is not a pattern for anyone's violence today. That day at Gibeon was unique, but the God who is both patient and just still hears his people when they pray.

To think about: What do you need to bring today to the God who is both patient and just, trusting that he hears?

About Joshua 10: The Sun Stands Still at Gibeon

Five Amorite kings attack Gibeon, and Joshua comes to its rescue as the LORD routs the enemy with panic and hailstones. At Joshua’s prayer the sun and moon halt until the battle is won, the five kings are captured, and Israel takes the cities of the south as the LORD commanded.
