Chapters in Jonah
- Jonah 1: Jonah Runs from God
God sends Jonah to warn Nineveh, but the prophet boards a ship for Tarshish to flee from the LORD. The LORD sends a fierce storm, the sailors learn Jonah is the cause, and when they throw him overboard the sea grows still, the crew worships the LORD, and a huge fish swallows Jonah.
- Jonah 2: Jonah Prays from the Fish
While still within the fish, Jonah offers a prayer of thanks to the LORD for rescuing him from drowning. He recalls sinking into the depths, promises to worship and keep his vows, and confesses that rescue comes from God, after which the fish puts him out on land.
- Jonah 3: Nineveh Repents
God calls Jonah again, and this time he goes to Nineveh to warn that the city will be destroyed in forty days. The people believe God and fast in sackcloth, the king decrees fasting, prayer and turning from violence, and God spares the city the ruin He had warned of.
- Jonah 4: Jonah's Anger and God's Compassion
Jonah is angry that God spared Nineveh, admitting he fled because he knew God was merciful. God gives him a shade plant, then sends a worm and a hot wind, and the book closes with God asking whether He should not care about a great city full of people and animals.
