John 6 Devotional

None Who Come Are Turned Away

“Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away.”John 6:37 (BSB)

Jesus takes a boy's five barley loaves and two fish, gives thanks, and feeds about five thousand men until everyone is full, with twelve baskets left over (6:9-13). The crowd wants to make him king by force (6:15), but the next day it is clear they are looking for more bread, not for him (6:26). So Jesus tells them plainly that he himself is the bread of life. No one who comes to him will be left hungry (6:35).

Then he explains why anyone comes at all. Everyone the Father gives him will come, he will never send away anyone who comes, and it is the Father's will that he lose none of them but raise them up on the last day (6:37-39). Many find this hard and walk away, yet Peter answers that there is no one else to turn to, because life that lasts forever is found in what Jesus says (6:66-68). Your coming to Jesus rests on the Father's drawing, and your staying rests on Jesus' keeping. That makes him safe to come to today.

To think about: What keeps you from coming to Jesus with your hunger, when he has promised never to turn you away?

About John 6: The Bread of Life

Jesus feeds five thousand and walks on the sea. He then declares himself the bread of life, teaching that coming to him depends on the Father giving and drawing people to him. Many disciples leave, but Peter confesses him.
