John 14 Devotional

Peace the World Cannot Give

“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”John 14:6 (BSB)

Jesus has just said he is leaving, and now he speaks to his disciples' troubled hearts (14:1). He is going to his Father's house to prepare a place for them, and he will come back to bring them to be with him (14:2-3). When Thomas says they do not know the way, Jesus answers that he is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and the only road to the Father (14:5-6). When Philip asks to see the Father, Jesus tells him that to see Jesus is to see the Father (14:8-9).

He does not leave them on their own. The Father will give them another Advocate, the Spirit of truth, to be with them forever (14:16-17), and Jesus promises that he and the Father will come and make their home with those who love him (14:23). Then he gives them his own peace, unlike anything the world hands out (14:27). Peace here is not the absence of trouble. It is the presence of Jesus, and his peace is yours to receive even before the trouble ends.

To think about: What trouble are you carrying today that you could bring to Jesus, who has promised you his own peace?
