Jeremiah 6 Devotional

Rest Down the Old Road

Jeremiah 6 is full of alarms: an army from the north, a siege ramp raised against a city that spills out wickedness the way a well spills out water (6:1-7). Yet its prophets and priests treat the people's deep wound as a scratch, announcing peace when there is none (6:14). False comfort is its own kind of cruelty. A wound treated as minor is never healed.

Into that noise God speaks with surprising gentleness. He tells his people to stop at the crossroads, ask which way is the old and good one, and walk in it, and their souls will find rest (6:16). He appoints watchmen to warn them (6:17). Both times their answer is a flat refusal. Jesus later invited the weary to come to him, take his yoke, and learn from him, promising rest for their souls (Matthew 11:28-29). The good way turns out to be a Person to follow. When the world offers easy peace, God offers the real thing, and it begins with honesty about the wound.

To think about: Where have you been settling for an easy reassurance instead of bringing the real wound to Jesus for rest?

About Jeremiah 6: Siege Warning and the Old Paths

God warns that an army from the north will besiege Jerusalem because the city is full of oppression and its leaders give false assurances of safety. The people refuse His call to walk in the old good way and heed His watchmen, so their offerings are refused and they are judged as worthless metal.
