Jeremiah 52 Devotional

Every Word Accounted For

“For because of the anger of the LORD, all this happened in Jerusalem and Judah, until He finally banished them from His presence. And Zedekiah also rebelled against the king of Babylon.”Jeremiah 52:3 (BSB)

Chapter 51 closes by noting that the words of Jeremiah end there (51:64). Then chapter 52 retells the fall: siege, famine, a blinded king, a burned temple (52:4-14). The narrator names the cause first. The LORD's anger brought all this, until he banished his people from his presence (52:3).

Much of the chapter reads like an inventory. The bronze pillars, the stands, and the bronze Sea that Solomon made are broken up and hauled away (52:17-20). The pillars are described down to the pomegranates on their capitals (52:21-23). Back in 27:19-22, Jeremiah named these very objects and said they would go to Babylon, while Hananiah promised a return within two years (28:3). The prophet's voice has gone silent, but every word he spoke has come to pass. Jesus said his words would outlast heaven and earth (Matthew 24:35). Yet 27:22 also promised that God would one day bring those articles back. What God says, he does, in judgment and in mercy, so his promises can bear your full weight.

To think about: Which of God's promises do you find hardest to believe, and how does his faithfulness to his word in this chapter strengthen your trust?
