Jeremiah 49 Devotional
Room for Widows in Edom
“Abandon your orphans; I will preserve their lives. Let your widows trust in Me.””Jeremiah 49:11 (BSB)
Five peoples pass under judgment in quick succession. Ammon trusts in its riches and asks who could ever come against it (49:4). Edom's pride has deceived it; though it nests high like an eagle among the rocks, God will bring it down (49:16). Damascus panics, Kedar and Hazor are scattered, and Elam's bow is broken (49:23-38). No height, wealth, or distance puts a nation beyond God's reach (49:19).
Yet mercy breaks through in unexpected places. Amid the word that Edom will be stripped bare, God says to leave the orphans with him, because he will keep them alive, and to let the widows rely on him (49:10-11). The most defenseless people of an enemy nation are invited to rest on Israel's God. Ammon and Elam are promised restoration afterward (49:6, 39). The psalmist describes God as a father for those without fathers and a protector of widows (Psalm 68:5). His judgments on the proud never cancel his care for the weak. If you feel defenseless today, that care reaches you too.
To think about: In what way do you feel defenseless right now, and what would it mean to entrust that to the God who cares for the weak?
