Jeremiah 45 Devotional

A Smaller Promise Kept

“Thus Jeremiah was to say to Baruch: “This is what the LORD says: Throughout the land I will demolish what I have built and uproot what I have planted.”Jeremiah 45:4 (BSB)

This brief chapter returns to when Baruch wrote Jeremiah's words on the scroll (45:1). Baruch is worn out. He complains that the LORD has added sorrow to his pain and that he can find no rest (45:3). God answers him by name, though not by taking the sorrow away.

First, God widens the frame. Across the whole land he is tearing down what he himself built and uprooting what he planted (45:4). Baruch's grief is real, but it sits inside a far greater loss, the undoing of God's own work. Then God asks whether Baruch is seeking great things for himself, and tells him to stop, because disaster is coming on everyone (45:5). Last comes a promise, smaller than Baruch's hopes but completely sure. Wherever he goes, God will give him his life as a prize of war. Jesus said that whoever loses his life for his sake will find it (Matthew 16:25). When God trims your ambitions, he is not abandoning you. What he promises, he keeps, and it is enough.

To think about: What great thing have you been seeking for yourself, and what promise from God might be enough for you in this season?

About Jeremiah 45: A Word to Baruch

The LORD answers Baruch, who wrote down Jeremiah’s messages and has been lamenting his sorrow and weariness. Since the LORD is tearing down the nation He planted, Baruch must not pursue greatness for himself. Though disaster will come on everyone, God promises to spare Baruch’s life wherever he goes.
