Jeremiah 4 Devotional
A Ruin God Will Not Finish
“For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land will be desolate, but I will not finish its destruction.”Jeremiah 4:27 (BSB)
God's call in Jeremiah 4 goes deeper than behavior. He tells Judah to break up its unplowed ground and to circumcise their hearts to him (4:3-4). An outward mark of belonging is not enough; he wants hearts that are truly his. Then the warnings sound: a lion out of its thicket, a searing wind, chariots like a whirlwind (4:7, 11-13), and the prophet cries out in anguish (4:19).
In 4:23-26 Jeremiah looks and sees the earth formless and empty, the heavens without light, and no person left. It is creation running backward to the darkness of Genesis 1:2. Sin does not only break rules. It unravels the good world God made. Yet in the middle of that vision, God says that although the whole land will be desolate, he will not bring it to a complete end (4:27). Judgment is real, and mercy sets its limits. The changed heart he demands here is one he also promised to give (Deuteronomy 30:6). That is where hope for any hard heart begins.
To think about: Where do you sense God asking for a changed heart rather than changed behavior alone, and will you ask him to do that work in you?
