Isaiah 52 Devotional

Freedom No Money Could Buy

“For this is what the LORD says: “You were sold for nothing, and without money you will be redeemed.””Isaiah 52:3 (BSB)

Zion is told to wake up, shake off the dust, and remove the chains from her neck (52:1-2). Then God explains the terms of her release. No money changed hands when she was sold, and none will be needed to buy her back (52:3). God himself does the redeeming, because his name has been mocked all day long (52:5-6).

News of it travels on foot. Messengers cross the mountains announcing peace, salvation, and God's reign, and Jerusalem's watchmen shout together as the LORD returns (52:7-8). The exiles leave without panic, because the LORD goes before them and guards them from behind (52:12). Then the chapter turns to the Servant, raised high after being disfigured beyond human likeness (52:13-14). Peter says the price of believers' freedom was not anything perishable like silver or gold, but Christ's own blood (1 Peter 1:18-19). It is free to those who receive it because someone else bore its cost. That is news worth carrying across any mountain.

To think about: Who in your life needs to hear that God redeems freely, and how could you carry that news to them?
