Isaiah 4 Devotional
Washed Through the Fire
“when the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains from the heart of Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire.”Isaiah 4:4 (BSB)
Chapter 4 opens on a bleak scene. So few men are left that seven women plead with one man to let them carry his name and take away their disgrace (4:1). Then, abruptly, the tone changes. The prophet speaks of the Branch of the LORD, beautiful and glorious, and of survivors in Zion who will be called holy (4:2-3).
How does a city stained with bloodshed become holy? The chapter answers that the Lord himself washes it, removing Jerusalem's filth and bloodstains through judgment and burning (4:4). Holiness here is not something the remnant achieves. God does it for them, through judgment rather than by ignoring sin. Then he spreads his presence over Zion as cloud by day and fire by night, as he once guided Israel through the wilderness (Exodus 13:21), a canopy against heat and storm (4:5-6). The God who cleanses is also the God who covers. Whatever has stained you, his cleansing is real, and his shelter is meant to be lived under.
To think about: Where do you need to stop trying to make yourself holy and instead rest under the cleansing and shelter God provides?
