Isaiah 30 Devotional

A God Eager to Show Grace

“Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you; therefore He rises to show you compassion, for the LORD is a just God. Blessed are all who wait for Him.”Isaiah 30:18 (BSB)

Judah is in danger and makes a plan, but it is not God's plan. Envoys haul treasure through lion country to buy Egypt's help, which God mocks as a power that only sits still (30:1-7). The people tell the prophets to stop speaking the truth and give them pleasant illusions instead, and to get the Holy One of Israel out of their way (30:10-11).

God's answer is remarkably tender. If they had turned back and rested, they would have been saved, and calm trust would have been their strength, but they refused and chose fast horses to flee on (30:15-16). Even so, the LORD is eager to show them grace and mercy, for he is a God of justice (30:18). When they cry out, he will answer. Their Teacher will be seen, and a voice behind them will point out the way to walk, whether they turn right or left (30:19-21). Whatever you have been running toward instead of him, his grace meets you the moment you stop running.

To think about: What have you been running toward instead of resting in God, and what would returning to him look like today?

About Isaiah 30: Trusting Egypt Instead of the LORD

The LORD condemns Judah’s alliance with Egypt, a useless helper mockingly named Rahab, and a people who silence the prophets. Though they refused safety through repentance and quiet trust, the LORD still longs to show grace, promising guidance, healing, and plenty, and He shatters Assyria while His people sing.
