Isaiah 18 Devotional
Still Above the Commotion
“For this is what the LORD has told me: “I will quietly look on from My dwelling place, like shimmering heat in the sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.””Isaiah 18:4 (BSB)
Chapter 18 addresses Cush, a distant, widely feared nation whose envoys travel by boat (18:1-2). The whole world is told to watch for a signal on the mountains (18:3). Amid the motion, God describes himself as perfectly still. He will watch quietly from his dwelling, as calm as heat haze on a bright day or dew at harvest time (18:4).
His stillness is not inaction. At the right moment, before the harvest ripens, he prunes away the shoots (18:5). Nations rise and plan on their own timetables, but the outcome rests in his hands. And the chapter ends with a surprise: this feared, distant people will one day bring gifts to the LORD at Mount Zion (18:7). The nation that seemed only a threat is drawn into worship. God's calm is not the calm of indifference but of complete control. When the news is full of noise, the God who watches without hurry is still at work, and his purposes reach people very far away.
To think about: What news or pressure has you hurrying and anxious, and how does God's unhurried watchfulness speak to it?
