Hosea 6 Devotional

Loyalty That Burns Off by Noon

“For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”Hosea 6:6 (BSB)

The chapter opens with words that sound like model repentance. Come, the people say, let us return to the LORD; he has wounded us, but he will heal us, and he will come as surely as the sunrise and the spring rain (6:1-3). Yet God's reply is full of grief. He asks what he should do with Ephraim and Judah, because their loyalty is like morning mist and dew that vanishes (6:4). The words were right, but the love did not last.

What God wants is steadfast love and knowing him, more than burnt offerings (6:6). Instead, like Adam, they broke covenant, and even priests lie in ambush to murder (6:7-9). When critics objected to Jesus eating with tax collectors and sinners, he sent them back to this verse to learn what it means (Matthew 9:13). The mercy God desires is the mercy he showed first, at that table. Our loyalty may evaporate by midday, but his does not. Because he is faithful, you can bring him an honest heart instead of a polished performance.

To think about: Where has your devotion to God been more like morning mist than steady love, and what would honest return look like?

About Hosea 6: Shallow Repentance and True Mercy

The people urge one another to come back to the LORD, expecting healing and revival. The LORD answers that their loyalty vanishes like morning fog and that He wants mercy and knowing Him more than offerings. He charges Israel with covenant breaking and violence, even by priests, and appoints a harvest for Judah too.
