Hosea 2 Devotional

Thorns Across the Wrong Road

“So I will betroth you to Me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in loving devotion and compassion.”Hosea 2:19 (BSB)

Chapter 2 speaks in the language of a broken marriage. Israel has gone after other lovers, crediting them with her bread and water, her wool and oil (2:5). She never acknowledged that it was the LORD who gave her the grain, the wine, and even the silver and gold she spent on Baal (2:8). So God says he will hedge up her path with thorns until she cannot find the lovers she is chasing (2:6), and he will take back the gifts she misused (2:9). Even this judgment has a direction: she will say she was better off with her first husband (2:7).

Then the tone turns. God says he will lead her into the wilderness and speak to her tenderly, making the Valley of Achor a gateway of hope (2:14-15). He promises to bind her to himself forever, in righteousness and justice, steadfast love, compassion, and faithfulness, so that she will know the LORD (2:19-20). Thorns across a wrong road can be the mercy of a God who wants his people back.

To think about: Where might God be blocking a path you keep trying to take, and could that be his mercy calling you home?

About Hosea 2: The LORD Woos His Unfaithful Bride

The LORD brings charges against Israel as an unfaithful wife who credited false gods with the harvests He gave her, and He announces that He will block her way and strip away her crops and festivals. Then He promises to draw her back in the wilderness, renew the covenant forever, and claim her once more as His own.
