Hebrews 7 Devotional

A Priest Who Never Dies

“Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them.”Hebrews 7:25 (BSB)

Hebrews 7 lingers over Melchizedek, the king of righteousness and king of peace, a priest who blessed Abraham and received a tenth from him (7:1-4). His priesthood did not come through Levi's family line, and neither does Jesus', who descended from Judah (7:13-14). Jesus is a priest not by inheriting an office but by the power of a life that cannot be destroyed (7:16). God confirmed it with an oath he will not take back (7:21).

That changes where we stand. Israel's priests kept dying, so the office kept passing to others (7:23). Jesus lives forever, so his priesthood never ends (7:24). He can save fully and finally everyone who comes to God through him, because he lives forever to plead their case (7:25). He needs no daily sacrifices for his own sin, since he offered himself once for all (7:27). Today, while you go about ordinary tasks, the risen Jesus is still speaking to the Father on your behalf. You can come to God through him without fear of being turned away.

To think about: How might your prayers change if you remembered that Jesus is already praying for you?

About Hebrews 7: Melchizedek and Christ's Priesthood

Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High, received tithes from Abraham and foreshadows Christ. Because the Levitical priesthood could not bring perfection, Jesus has become a permanent priest by God's oath, who lives forever to plead for his people and saves them fully.
