Hebrews 10 Devotional

Confidence to Come In

“Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.”Hebrews 10:23 (BSB)

Hebrews 10 contrasts two kinds of priests. The old priests stood day after day offering the same sacrifices, which could never take sin away (10:11). Christ offered one sacrifice for sins for all time and then sat down (10:12). By that single offering he has made his people perfect forever, even while they are still being made holy (10:14).

So the chapter invites believers to draw near with full assurance, to hold on to their hope, and to keep meeting together to encourage one another (10:22-25). Then comes a severe warning. For those who deliberately go on sinning after knowing the truth, and treat the Son's blood as worthless, no other sacrifice remains (10:26-29). The warning is real, and it points the same way as the invitation: there is nowhere else to go but Christ. The author reminds his readers how they once endured suffering and urges them not to throw away their confidence (10:32-35). You can keep holding on today because the one who made the promise is faithful.

To think about: Who in your church could you encourage this week to keep holding on to their hope in Christ?

About Hebrews 10: Once for All and Hold Fast

The Law's sacrifices could never take away sins, but Christ's single offering has perfected those being sanctified. Believers can therefore draw near with confidence, hold fast their hope, and meet together, but deliberate sin after knowing the truth brings fearful judgment.
