Genesis 8 Devotional

The God Who Remembers

“But God remembered Noah and all the animals and livestock that were with him in the ark. And God sent a wind over the earth, and the waters began to subside.”Genesis 8:1 (BSB)

For months Noah and his family drift on an empty sea, with no land in sight and no word from God recorded. Then comes the turning point of the whole flood story, when God remembers Noah (8:1). In the Bible, God remembering never means he had forgotten. It means he acts on his promise. A wind blows, the waters go down, and at last a dove brings back a fresh olive leaf.

When Noah steps onto dry ground, the first thing he does is build an altar and worship. God answers with a promise that is startling in its honesty. He will never again curse the ground or destroy all life by a flood, even though people's hearts are still bent toward evil from childhood (8:21). The flood did not fix the human heart. God's patience with the world rests on his own mercy, not on our improvement, and every seedtime and harvest since is a reminder of it (8:22).

To think about: Where in your life does God seem to have gone quiet, and how does his remembering Noah give you hope?

About Genesis 8: The Waters Recede

God remembers Noah, and the waters recede until the ark rests on the mountains of Ararat. Noah sends out a raven and a dove until the dove returns no more. Leaving the ark, Noah builds an altar, and the Lord promises never again to curse the ground or destroy all life by a flood.
