Genesis 5 Devotional
Life in the Shadow of Death
“Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more, because God had taken him away.”Genesis 5:24 (BSB)
Genesis 5 reads like a row of headstones. Name after name, the same pattern repeats: a man lives, has children, and dies. It is the quiet proof of what God warned in the garden. However long the lives, they all end the same way.
Then the pattern breaks. Enoch walks with God, and then he is gone, because God took him (5:24). In a chapter full of funerals, one life ends in God's presence instead of the grave. And at the close of the list, Lamech names his son Noah, hoping for relief from the hard, cursed ground (5:29). These are small lights, but they point forward. The one who finally breaks the reign of death is Jesus, who rose from the dead and promised life beyond death to all who trust him (John 11:25-26). Walking with God now is not a way to earn that life. It is how that life begins.
To think about: What would it look like to walk with God in the ordinary tasks ahead of you today?
