Genesis 43 Devotional

Mercy at the Table

“I will guarantee his safety. You may hold me personally responsible. If I do not bring him back and set him before you, then may I bear the guilt before you all my life.”Genesis 43:9 (BSB)

The grain runs out, and the brothers have to go back to Egypt, which means taking Benjamin. Jacob refuses until Judah steps forward and offers himself as the guarantee for Benjamin's safety, willing to bear the blame for the rest of his life (43:8-9). Jacob finally lets them go, praying that God Almighty will grant them mercy, and resigning himself to loss (43:14).

The brothers arrive expecting accusation, and instead they are brought into Joseph's house, Simeon is released, and they are seated at a feast. They are told not to be afraid, because their God has given them the silver they found in their sacks (43:23). When Joseph sees Benjamin, he hurries out to weep in private (43:30). The brothers still do not know who he is, but they are already receiving mercy from the one they wronged. Grace often arrives before we understand it. The God who invites you to his table is kinder than your fears.

To think about: Where are you bracing for judgment when God may be preparing a place for you at his table?
