Genesis 34 Devotional

When God's People Fail

Genesis 34 is one of the hardest chapters in the Bible, and it does not look away. Shechem violates Jacob's daughter Dinah and then wants to marry her (34:2-4). Jacob says nothing. His sons answer with deceit, insisting the men of the city be circumcised, and while they are still in pain, Simeon and Levi kill them all and plunder the town (34:25-29). Jacob's only response is fear for his own safety, and the brothers ask whether their sister should have been treated like a prostitute (34:30-31).

God is never mentioned in this chapter. That silence is part of the point. When the family of promise acts without him, they mirror the violence of the world around them. Yet God does not abandon them. In the next chapter he calls Jacob back to Bethel, and a terror from God keeps the surrounding cities from pursuing them (35:5). Scripture names sin honestly, even among God's people, and God's faithfulness is the only hope this family has.

To think about: Where have you seen God's people respond to wrong in ways that mirror the world, and how might you respond differently?
