Genesis 24 Devotional

Led Step by Step

“saying, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld His kindness and faithfulness from my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.””Genesis 24:27 (BSB)

Abraham, now old, sends his chief servant back to his relatives to find a wife for Isaac, trusting that the LORD will send his angel ahead (24:7). At the well outside the town, the servant prays for a specific sign, and before he has finished praying, Rebekah comes out with her jar and does exactly what he asked (24:15-20). When he learns who she is, he bows and worships, blessing the LORD for not withholding his kindness and faithfulness, and for leading him on the way (24:27).

This is a long chapter, and much of it is the servant retelling the story and giving God the credit at every turn. No voice speaks from heaven. God guides through prayer, ordinary events, a family's hospitality, and Rebekah's own willing answer (24:58). The God who led Abraham's servant is just as faithful now. Because he is guiding, you can take the next ordinary step with prayer, and look back later to see that he was leading all along.

To think about: What ordinary step do you need to take today while trusting God to guide you?
