Genesis 14 Devotional

Blessed by God Most High

“and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything.”Genesis 14:20 (BSB)

Genesis 14 opens with a war between kings, and Lot, now living in Sodom, is carried off with everything he owns. Abram gathers the 318 trained men of his household, pursues the raiders by night, and brings back Lot, the people, and the goods (14:14-16). Then two kings come out to meet him. Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High, brings bread and wine, blesses Abram, and blesses God for giving him the victory (14:18-20). The king of Sodom offers him the plunder, and Abram refuses even a thread, so that no one could say a human king had made him rich (14:23).

Abram knew where his victory and his wealth came from. Later Scripture takes up this mysterious priest-king and sees in him a picture of Jesus, who is both king and priest forever (Psalm 110:4; Hebrews 7:1-3). Your security does not rest on what the world offers you. It rests on the blessing of God Most High.

To think about: Whose provision or approval are you leaning on in a way that crowds out your trust in God?
