Genesis 1 Devotional

Made on Purpose

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”Genesis 1:27 (BSB)

Genesis opens with God, not with the world. Before anything else exists, he is already there, and everything that follows comes from his word alone. He speaks, and there is light. He separates and names, then fills what he has made, until the dark, empty waters of verse 2 become an ordered and living home. Nothing in this chapter resists him or helps him. Creation is not his struggle but his gift.

At the high point of it all, God makes man and woman in his own image (1:27), and then calls everything he has made very good. Your worth does not begin with what you achieve or with what others think of you. It begins with a God who made you on purpose. And the God who brought light out of darkness on the first day is the same God who now shines in human hearts to show us his glory in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6).

To think about: Where are you looking for your worth today, and what changes if you start from the fact that God made you in his image?

About Genesis 1: The Creation

God creates the heavens and the earth, and over six days he forms light, sky, land, seas, plants, sun, moon, stars, and living creatures by his word. On the sixth day he creates mankind, male and female, in his own image, and he sees that everything he made is very good.
