Galatians 6 Devotional

Boasting Only in the Cross

“But as for me, may I never boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”Galatians 6:14 (BSB)

When someone is caught in sin, those who live by the Spirit should restore him gently, watching themselves, because they too can be tempted (6:1). Believers carry one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ (6:2). Paul warns that no one fools God. A person reaps what he sows, whether destruction from the flesh or eternal life from the Spirit, so he urges them not to grow tired of doing good (6:7-9).

Then Paul writes in large letters with his own hand (6:11). Those pressing circumcision want to make a good impression and avoid persecution for the cross (6:12-13). Paul will boast in only one thing, the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, which has ended the world's claim on him and his claim on the world (6:14). What counts is not a mark in the flesh but a new creation (6:15). Everything that matters has been done by Christ on the cross, so believers can bear each other's burdens humbly, with nothing of their own left to prove.

To think about: Whose burden could you help carry this week, knowing you have nothing of your own to prove?

About Galatians 6: Bearing Burdens and Boasting in the Cross

Believers should gently restore those caught in sin and bear one another's burdens, knowing that people reap what they sow. Paul closes in his own hand, contrasting those who boast in circumcision with his own boast in the cross, and declaring that new creation is what counts.
