Ezra 4 Devotional
When the Work Stands Still
“Thus the construction of the house of God in Jerusalem ceased, and it remained at a standstill until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.”Ezra 4:24 (BSB)
Opposition begins with an offer of help. The people of the land say they worship the same God and ask to build too, and Zerubbabel and Jeshua refuse, as Cyrus had commanded (4:1-3). The narrator has already called these neighbors enemies (4:1), and what follows shows it. They discourage and frighten the builders and hire counselors to frustrate them for years (4:4-5). The chapter then gathers opposition from later reigns, including a letter to Artaxerxes branding Jerusalem a rebellious city (4:6-16). The king orders a halt, and officials stop the work by force (4:21-23).
Yet notice its last word. The work on the house of God stood still until the second year of Darius (4:24). That word until marks a limit. The narrator already knows the halt is not the end, and the next chapter shows God moving again through his prophets. Delays in God's work can be real and long without being defeat. When something you hoped God would build seems stalled, you can wait without concluding that he has stopped.
To think about: What in your life feels stalled right now, and what would it look like to wait on God without deciding he has stopped working?
